NEW YORK CITY-The city’s efforts to revitalize the Fresh Kills landfill with solar and wind power on Staten Island’s West Shore is coming closer to fruition after local officials announced that the borough is officially seeking a developer for the 75-acre site. Deputy Mayor Cas Holloway and representatives from the New York City Economic Development Corp. and the Department of Environmental Protection were on-hand on Tuesday afternoon for the official release of a request for proposals for the design, construction, installation and operation of a solar farm and wind turbines on the property.
“New York City needs energy to keep it running, and we want that power to be reliable, clean and affordable,” Holloway says, explaining that the RFP, if successful, will more than double the renewable energy capacity throughout the five boroughs. “Renewable energy is the most sustainable kind, and under Mayor Bloomberg’s leadership we’re maximizing the use of city assets to develop as much as possible.”
According to the city, the property has the potential to generate up to 20 megawatts of renewable energy, enough to power roughly 6,000 homes. Borough President James P. Molinaro has previously proposed to erect seven 400-foot wind turbines on the site, but the individual proposals may vary. Submission dates are May 24, August 15, November 15 and a final submission date of February 15, 2013.
At 2,200 acres large, Fresh Kills once served as the city's principal solid waste landfill until 2001. In 2006, the New York City Department of Parks & Recreation began work to develop Freshkills Park, which will incorporate the solar and wind power installations outlined in the RFP.
The initiative is part of the city's long-term PlaNYC 2030 plan, which aims to reduce carbon emissions and greenhouse gases, as well as make the city's existing infrastructure more energy efficient.
