NEW YORK CITY-The city’s efforts to revitalize the Fresh Kills landfill with solar and wind power on Staten Island’s West Shore is coming closer to fruition after local officials announced that the borough is officially seeking a developer for the 75-acre site. Deputy Mayor Cas Holloway and representatives from the New York City Economic Development Corp. and the Department of Environmental Protection were on-hand on Tuesday afternoon for the official release of a request for proposals for the design, construction, installation and operation of a solar farm and wind turbines on the property.

“New York City needs energy to keep it running, and we want that power to be reliable, clean and affordable,” Holloway says, explaining that the RFP, if successful, will more than double the renewable energy capacity throughout the five boroughs. “Renewable energy is the most sustainable kind, and under Mayor Bloomberg’s leadership we’re maximizing the use of city assets to develop as much as possible.”
