MIAMI—Despite the casino bill stalling, Resorts World Miami is moving forward with plans for a $3 billion luxury mixed-use development on the 13.9-acre Miami Herald site. Arquitectonica is preparing a revised design that includes condominiums, a five-star hotel, waterfront restaurants, and related amenities. Resorts World Miami could not immediately be reached for comment on specific details.

“The new design for Resorts World Miami will bring to life one of Miami’s most underutilized pieces of waterfront land after decades of inactivity,” Bernardo Fort-Brescia, co-founder and principal of Arquitectonica, said in a statement. “With more and more people traveling to downtown Miami and a growing number of residents calling the area home, we are going to seize the opportunity to convert this prime piece of bayfront land into the centerpiece of a thriving neighborhood.”

The updated design for Resorts World Miami will transform the Miami Herald site—long considered one of the city’s most inaccessible and dilapidated stretches of bayfront—into a downtown focal point and pedestrian-friendly gathering place. Plans still include an 800 foot-long, 50 foot-wide waterfront promenade with a 200 feet view corridor with landscaped green space. The plans will also preserve vistas between the growing Omni district and Biscayne Bay.

“If Miami’s residential market is going to keep up with demand from international buyers, then we have to get some new projects developed,” Alicia Cervera Lamadrid, managing partner of Cervera Real Estate, tells GlobSt.com. “There are few remaining developable sites left in the urban core and there’s nothing else being planned on the downtown Miami waterfront at the moment.”
