FORT WAYNE, IN-Parkview Health recently opened its new $536 million new hospital campus here, moving its main facility from the downtown to Parkview Plaza Drive. The new facility adds about 975,000 square feet to the original Parkview North building.

The hospital made the decision in 2008 to move from its main downtown headquarters at Parkview Hospital. Firm executives told GlobeSt.com then that the main facility was more than 50 years old, and not expandable. That facility will remain a community hospital, the executives said.

The new 410-bed Parkview Regional Medical Center was developed by Chicago-based Jones Lang LaSalle’s project and development services division. Other firms involved included Dallas-based HKS Architects, Indianapolis-based Pepper Construction and locally based Weigand Construction.

Gary Greene, JLL program manager, tells GlobeSt.com that the state-of-the-art technology stands out at this new facility, which has a trauma center, emergency room, surgery center, physician offices and a helipad. Greene says patients, who get their own private room, will see a dramatic increase in technology use at the facility.

“It’s all about the best possible delivery of care,” Greene says. “We call the patient rooms ‘Smart Rooms,’ as all the systems are interactive and connected. Nurse call systems connect to smart phones carried by the caregivers, with the vital signs as well. Medication needs are bar-coded. Patients can order from food service from their bed. Even the TV is interactive.”

The facility is also at the forefront of sustainability, he says. The new complex has energy-efficient windows, and local plantings and a rain garden to control and filter water runoff over an underground parking structure. The developers also used least-toxic materials during construction. Further, Greene says JLL as able to bring the building in at $11 million under budget, allowing Parkview to add two new operating rooms.
