NEW YORK CITY-A bomb scare occurred in Lower Manhattan earlier this morning after a suspicious package was discovered at Brookfield Office Properties' Two World Financial Center. Employees from Nomura were evacuated after a package -- which contained a device that resembled an explosive -- was detected by a scanner in the building's mail room, GlobeSt.com has learned. As of 12:25 p.m., the New York City Police Department has confirmed that the item was a novelty grenade.

At the scene, an NYPD official says "the authorities have responded, the bomb squad has responded, and everything is now safe."

The building is adjacent to the 16-acre World Trade Center site, the location of the largest terrorist attack in American history.

Employees were allowed back in the building shortly after the NYPD gave clearance.

Helicopters hovered over Battery Park City after the scare. A spokeswoman for Brookfield declined to comment to GlobeSt.com for this story.
