Blockbuster is going to offer guaranteed rentals of the newest Mission: Impossible film. That's the latest news.

But it was news to us that the retailer still has 1,000 stores where it is offering the movie. We must have stopped paying attention because we didn't think that the retailer had so many stores left.

Apparently current owner Dish Network thinks that keeping some stores open is a good way to market the online and mail-order component of Blockbuster's business. However, Dish earlier this year said it was closing 500 of the 1,500 stores it had open at that time.

Dish officials have said that they could close even more stores. We would actually be surprised if this didn't happen (but then again, we didn't know they still had so many stores in the first place.)

So far it looks like Best Buy and Sears are the two main store-closing candidates right now. Can you think of other large chains that face a similar fate?
