HACKENSACK, NJ-AvalonBay Communities has formally broken ground on a new mid-rise apartment complex that will be the first luxury development in Hackensack in decades. The community will be AvalonBay’s 16th apartment development in New Jersey.

“We are proud to further expand our presence in New Jersey,” says AvalonBay’s Ron Ladell, who tells GlobeSt.com that this makes four construction projects the company has going on in the state right now. The AvalonBay Hackensack will comprise 226 units in two four-story buildings over parking. Each building will have studio, one-, two-, and three-bedroom apartments.

“Most of the apartments along Prospect Avenue in Hackensack is well-maintained, well-occupied, but it is older,” Ladell says. “It’s time to bring a new luxury community and a different product to a location that can’t be beat.”

“AvalonBay’s site on Hackensack Avenue has got to be one of the best locations imaginable,” says Ladell. It is within walking distance of Hackensack River County Park, local restaurants, and The Shops at Riverside, he noted. The NJ Transit River Edge train station is less than a half-mile from the community, providing a quick commute to Manhattan’s Penn Station.

Ladell says the complex will have a fitness center, outdoor pool, a resident lounge, game room, and barbeque and picnic areas. Each apartment will have a washer and dryer.

Other AvalonBay multi-family projects in the works right now include 266 apartments opening at Westmont in Wood-Ridge, 164 apartments being built in North Bergen and conversion of a former condominium complex in Franklin to luxury apartments.
