Sears Holdings Corp. is doing some more tinkering to stay effectively afloat. The retailer is adding more stores within its stores, and this time it's Scrubology, which specializes in the "scrubs" that health professionals wear.
So far the concept is in 52 Sears and Kmart units, and the company looks to expand the concept in major markets across the country. It seems like a niche, but the retailer claims that it attracts a young and affluent consumer.
The news comes as Sears is supposedly trying to sell its most well-know store-within-a-store concept, Land's End. Just a couple of years ago, it added Edwin Watts, a golf concept, to many of its units.
The store-within-a-store concept is something that has gained popularity in recent years. Sephora cosmetics are available in many JCPenney locations. Apple has stores in Walmart now.
This latest move by Sears seems pretty smart. Unfortunately, though, this niche is probably not broad enough to make a big difference in the long run in turning around the retailer.
