DENVER-The city will be the site of some intense real estate scrutiny in June, as the National Association of Real Estate Editors meets here for its 46th annual Spring Real Estate Conference. The association expects hundreds of attendees at the Brown Palace Hotel & Spa from June 20-23.
Executive Director Mary Doyle-Kimball tells GlobeSt.com that the conference will feature national real estate experts brought together with media counterparts to discuss the current trends in the industry, as well as examine local tours of Colorado development. Attendees will see a lot of Denver, from the lower downtown, or LoDo, to a trip to Vail Resorts.
“The last time we were in Denver was in 1998, when Coors Field had just opened a couple of years before,” she says. “Now we can see how the stadium has brought that former warehouse area to life. We also hope to see other projects, such as the now $6.5 billion transportation infrastructure project now underway.”
Main topics for the journalists will be social media, and it’s killing effect on print newspapers. Across the country, most print newspapers have cut staff, and many have closed, including the local Rocky Mountain News, which shut down in February 2009. Doyle-Kimball says the conference will feature experts to talk about the future of real estate news coverage, from experts such as Gregory Moore, editor of the Denver Post, as well as discussions about the move to online coverage and how to handle this now-24-hour news cycle. You can see a schedule of sessions here.
“Online news is definitely the new frontier, especially this next generation, their hands have never really touched print,” she says. “If they get the New York Times, they’re reading it online or they have an app. We’re seeing the impact of social media firsthand, as our attendees tweet live during our presentations, you can see them on their smartphones and iPads at the back of the room.”
