TRENTON-Panasonic Corp. chairman and CEO Joseph M. Taylor will receive a top leadership award from New Jersey Future for moving to build a new LEED Platinum headquarters for his company in a transit-oriented redevelopment area in downtown Newark.

The 25-year-old organization is to honor Taylor, and seven Smart Growth Award-winning projects and plans at a June 7 dinner at the Newark Club.

The project winners announced Thursday include:

  • Ironstate Development, Minno & Wasko Architects and Planners, and Pegasus Group for the first residential development adjacent to the Harrison PATH station in Hudson County.
  • The partners working on Gateway Transit Village in New Brunswick, Middlesex County, who include the New Brunswick Development Corp. and Parking Authority, state Economic Development Authority and Pennrose Properties.
  • Alberto & Associates, the Borough of Somerdale, and National Realty & Development for the transformation of a shopping center in Somerdale, Camden County.
  • Brown & Keener, the Town of Hammonton, Main Street Hammonton, and the Land Use Center at the College of New Jersey for creating an innovative alternative to traditional zoning in Atlantic County.
  • Passaic County, the Association of NJ Environmental Commissions, Canal Society of NJ, Morris Canal Greenway Feasibility Study, and the Louis Berger Group for an open-space preservation plan involving six communities.
  • Jersey City Redevelopment Authority, St. Peter’s College, Trinity Choice Communities and the University-Neighborhood Center Revitalization organization (Hudson County) for the McGinley Square redevelopment plan.

Panasonic’s Taylor is being singled out for the Cary Edwards Leadership Award, which is named for a late former assemblyman and state attorney general who played a key role in passage of the State Planning Act in 1987. The award recognizes individuals who have made an outstanding commitment to improving the quality of life and promoting smart growth in New Jersey through sustainable land-use policy and practice.

"Joe Taylor has exhibited exceptional leadership and vision in choosing to relocate his company's headquarters to downtown Newark, where infrastructure already exists and employees will have easy access to a major regional transit hub," said New Jersey Future’s executive director, Peter Kasabach.

"Mr. Taylor's decision to invest in Newark's ongoing revitalization will provide lasting benefits to Panasonic, to its employees and to the city itself, and we are proud to recognize his vision with this award."

Ingrid Reed, the New Jersey Future board member and senior fellow who chaired the awards selection committee, said every project honored shared a single goal: “to foster responsible development that creates vibrant places to live, work, study and enjoy.”

New Jersey Future’s members include concerned citizens and business leaders seeking to promote responsible land-use policies. The organization does original research and analysis and looks to build coalitions in pursuit of helping to revitalize cities and towns, protect natural lands and farms, support mass-transit alternatives, and expand access to safe and affordable neighborhoods.
