We're not sure if this was a well-known fact and we just missed the boat, but recently deceased author Ray Bradbury played a role in the design of two significant malls in Southern California, Westfield's Horton Plaza and General Growth Properties' Glendale Galleria.
According to this biography, architect Jon Jerde drew inspiration from an essay Bradbury wrote about design called "The Girls Walk This Way; The Boys Walk That Way -- A Dream For Los Angeles." The work reportedly influenced his design of Glendale Galleria.
Later, the two met, and Bradbury was a consultant on Jerde's design of Horton Plaza, in San Diego.
When we go to San Diego later this year for the ICSC Western Division Conference, we will pay another visit to Horton. It will assuredly look different with this knowledge.
