NEW YORK CITY-David Winoker, president of Manhattan real estate firm Winoker Realty, died on June 15 in a skydiving accident in upstate New York, according to the New York Daily News. He was 49.

According to the News, witnesses saw Winoker and his instructor, 25-year-old Alexander Chulsky, plummet to the ground after a parachute malfunction. Winoker, of Chappaqua, NY, was taking a skydiving lesson as part of a friend’s 50th birthday celebration.

The news has sent a shockwave across New York’s commercial real estate community. Once known for his knowledge and dominance in the Fashion District, Winoker grew the second-generation business founded by his father into an independent, mid-sized firm, overseeing day-to-day operations including tenant and landlord representation, asset and property management and due diligence services. He was also instrumental in the repositioning of 148 Madison Ave., 347 W. 36th St and, 32 Union Square East.

“Dave will be missed more than I can express at this moment,” says Corey Abdo, principal and executive vice president of Winoker Realty, in a prepared statement. “But his legacy survives, and the wonderful team of professionals he assembled and guided will make that legacy even stronger in the years ahead. At this moment, our thoughts are focused on his beautiful family and whatever we can do to make these terrible circumstances more bearable.”

Winoker is survived by wife Jillian, and his three children, Jared, Hillary and Allyson. Services were held at Shaaray Tefila, Bedford Corners, NY on June 17.
