LOS ANGELES-Mall owner Capri Urban Investors revealed its intentions to completely overhaul Baldwin Hills Crenshaw Plaza approximately two years ago, and the $35 million upgrade is now complete. Since the renovation began, several new retailers have opened their doors at the plaza including Staples, which now occupies a brand new building adjacent to the mall.

The comprehensive makeover, included the addition of new state-of-the-art movie theaters, several restaurants and retailers, a new outdoor plaza and cosmetic improvements. “We made a commitment to raise the bar at Baldwin Hills Crenshaw Plaza two years ago, to ensure we are providing the amenities, services and quality experiences consumers have come to expect at best-in-class facilities across the country,” says Ken Lombard, partner and president of Capri Urban Investors LLC, the owner of the mall, in a prepared statement.

BHCP is also now home to the all-new Rave Cinemas 15, a modern multiplex featuring stadium seating, all-digital projection and seven RealD 3-D equipped auditoriums. The internationally acclaimed Debbie Allen Dance Academy, which moved from Culver City into a brand new building at the corner of Marlton and Santa Rosalia Avenues in 2009, continues to draw hundreds of young artists from across Southern California to Baldwin Hills Crenshaw Plaza each day, according to a prepared statement.

The mall now boasts several new dining options as well Post & Beam, Sbarro, Saffron Indian Cuisine, and Southern Girl Desserts. And in 2011, the first Buffalo Wild Wings in the City of Los Angeles opened its doors at Baldwin Hills Crenshaw Plaza.

The comprehensive upgrades have sparked investment from the mall’s anchors as well, according to the statement. Macy’s completed a multi-million dollar upgrade that included physical improvements to the store and the addition of new departments, fixtures and merchandise. Walmart is also undertaking significant renovations to enhance the shopping experience, adding features customers have long-requested including groceries, crafts and fabrics, and an expanded apparel selection.

Between the new Rave Cinemas 15 and the upgraded mall is a new 30,000-square-foot promenade that also “serves as the featured new entry point for the retail center.” The promenade features landscaping including dozens of mature trees, Bougainvillea and Japanese Boxwood plants, new lighting, as well as built-in seating areas, according to the statement. Project architects Omniplan and RAW International designed the new theatre and promenade to create a signature gathering area and entry point for the entire property.

Inside the mall, renovations include a new dining court with a kid’s seating area, a children’s play area, a new community room as well as concierge services with a broader range of services. Other improvements include new family restrooms, a new specialty kiosk and cart program, and signage.

“We are excited that members of the community are coming back to shop at Baldwin Hills Crenshaw Plaza, and are taking such pride in the upgraded mall,” says general manager Sharron King. “It’s important to us that the mall be a hub in the Crenshaw neighborhood, which is why we are so focused on bringing an exciting line-up of programs and events to Baldwin Hills Crenshaw Plaza.”
