TORONTO-Homewood Suites by Hilton, based in McLean, VA, is expanding rapidly in Canada, and has recently announced three new properties in the country. The firm, with 300 hotels, is still seeing new openings in the United States, but has increased its focus on the Great White North.
Homewood recently signed agreements for three new extended-stay suite hotels in three Canadian cities. Homewood will be the brand for a 112-room property being developed by MLS Management Ltd. by fourth quarter 2013, a 104-room hotel being built by Tasico Hospitality Group in Ajax by Q4 2014 and a 97-room property being developed by Kingsbury Hospitality Group Inc. in St. Jacobs by fourth quarter 2014.
The company already has 10 hotels in Canada, including three properties signed in early 2012. Bill Duncan, global head of brand management, tells GlobeSt.com that there’s another dozen properties in the works for Canada. “For whatever reason, Canada has turned into an amazing country for us, we’re getting incredibly strong performance from them with metrics much higher than US hotels,” he says. “It’s an amazing opportunity for us to grow the brand.”
He also says the extended-stay segment has been able to weather the recession well, and has been gaining customers from businesses looking to cut travel dollars. “I’ve been in this segment for 13 years, and have never seen it hotter,” Duncan says. “We have a lot to offer, and people are loving our product.”
