SAN FRANCISCO-The San Francisco Public Utilities Commission's new 13-story headquarters building located at 525 Golden Gate is complete. Engineering firm Arup led the sustainability consulting, mechanical, electrical, plumbing, acoustics, fire and information technology on the $190-million project, which is expected to achieve LEED Platinum certification.

Arup tells GlobeSt.com that the project dates back to 1999. The city planned to develop a multi-agency building, but the dot-com bust sidelined those plans in 2001, the firm explains. In 2007, the project started back up and was recently completed.

The building for SFPUC provides water, wastewater treatment, and power generation service to San Francisco and the Bay Area and is the result of aggressive environmental goals during the design process. The building, owned by the SFPUC, has many green features to significantly reduce the use of energy and water consumption, and provide a healthy office work environment with high interior air quality and natural daylight, according to Arup.

“The project goal to design a highly sustainable building required integration of architecture and engineering to an extreme level,” explains Todd Ravenscroft, project manager of the firm. In addition to helping the SFPUC achieve its sustainability goals, Arup provided mechanical and electrical engineering, acoustic, fire/life safety, and information technology and communications consulting. The project also included collaboration with the SFPUC's IT department to align equipment strategies with sustainability goals.

The building was designed in joint venture by KMD Architects and Stevens Architects. According to a release from those firms, in comparison to similarly-sized office buildings, the building features 50% less of a carbon footprint is 50%, uses 32% less energy, and consumes 60% less water.
