NEW YORK CITY-The long and arduous search is now over. After hunting for space for nearly 25 years, Nordstrom Inc., the Seattle-based specialty retailer known for its iconic shoe department, has finally found its perfect fit – Gary Barnett’s new massive mixed-use tower near One57.

After finalizing an agreement with Barnett’s Extell Development Corp., the department store will establish its first New York City flagship store inside the building at 225 W. 57th St.

“It’s been a long time coming, and many of you know that,” Peter Nordstrom, president of merchandising for the department store, said during a press conference at Nordstrom’s treasure & bond SoHo location on Thursday afternoon. “We’ve had a lot of good opportunities to consider, and there are certain people who didn’t think it would ever happen, and that crossed our minds as well. It just seemed pretty obvious that if we have the desire to be a strong national company that we should have a presence here in the best retail city in the world.”

At 285,000 square feet and seven stories, the department store will be one of the chain’s largest and most visible locations in the country, Nordstrom explained. “We had a chance over time to vet a lot of different choices and learn a lot about this marketplace,” he said. “That’s put us in a position where we were able to make a really good decision. We have a lot of confidence in Extell to build an iconic building that will reflect on us for us. We are thrilled about our location. We feel like it has a great opportunity to bring the best of what New York has to offer.”

The site, which fronts on the northern side of 57th Street between Broadway and Seventh Avenue, once housed the original Hard Rock Caf
