Yahoo, It’s a Boy! Yesterday the Yahoo! board announced 37 year-old Marissa Mayer as its new CEO. Mayer was a longtime Google executive and was responsible for the design of Google’s search engine. What is more interesting (and important) about her selection is that she is pregnant with her first child, a boy. We have commented a number of times that the corporate landscape is shockingly devoid of women in the top spot. In fact, the ranks of female chief executives are so thin that only 35 Fortune 1000 companies have women at the helm. There are numerous, deeply rooted biases that women have to deal with in corporate America, but motherhood is often at the top of the list, especially for relatively young female executives who are of child-bearing age. It is for this reason that I applaud the Yahoo! board, as Mayer’s pregnancy was apparently “not part of the consideration” for her selection. The board made the decision based on her experience and abilities, as it should. Yahoo!
