NEW YORK CITY-The old adage of “it’s not easy being green” is no match for Tishman Speyer Properties, Jack Resnick & Sons and NYU Langone Medical Center. The three commercial real estate powerhouses took home trophies from the New York Energy Consumers Council during the organization’s 2012 “Energy New York Awards” on Monday evening at the trendy Tribeca Rooftop in Lower Manhattan.

The council, which recognizes companies and individuals who have demonstrated leadership in energy efficiency and economic competitiveness, selected Tishman’s managing director of engineering, Stephen Latargia, NYU Langone’s SVP of facilities management Paul Schwabacher and president of Jack Resnick & Sons Jonathan Resnick as the big winners of the night for achieving significant cost savings and energy reductions in their respective portfolios.

Latargia (pictured, center) was determined to decrease energy waste across Tishman’s 60 million-square-foot portfolio. Through his efforts, Latargia developed a strategic approach to managing energy consumption by developing an approach based on real time energy data and the implementation of operational changes resulting in energy reduction measures.

Under Latargia’s leadership, the existing utility metering system was revamped to enable communication of 15-minute interval data to a web-based platform. This kind of monitoring and access to real time energy data increased awareness of how and where energy was being used (and misused) portfolio-wide, and allowed the building engineers to make targeted efficiency improvements, take corrective action and immediately enact low to no-cost energy conservation measures, resulting in significant saving and reductions in GHG emissions.

Over the last several years, the proof is in the pudding: the portfolio’s electric consumption has been reduced by 13% with a reduction in building population.

Resnick (pictured center-right, holding the award) was recognized for the repositioning of 250 Hudson St. in Hudson Square. Under Resnick’s direction, the former printing facility was transformed into a modern class A tower after several capital improvements were made, such as the implementation of high-efficiency HVAC systems, variable frequency drives, high-efficiency lighting systems, a green roof and an advanced building management system to improve operations. As a result, the property went LEED Silver in 2011 and operates 25% more efficiently than similar types of commercial office buildings.

Schwabacher (pictured with David Bomke, executive director at the New York Energy Consumers Council) was honored for reducing energy consumption across the entire NYU Langone portfolio of properties, which exceed 3.4 million square feet of mixed use space within New York City. Since the baseline year of 2005, Schwabacher’s energy management program has reduced consumption by 17% and greenhouse gas reductions by 34%, all while expanding the campus by 30%.

After the awards, guests enjoyed food and cocktails at the 15,000-square-foot event space at 2 Desbrosses St.

Attendees (including yours truly at GlobeSt) also got to enjoy the rooftop views.
