RUMSON, NJ-Benedict J. Torcivia, Sr., a Paterson native who went on to found one of the top construction firms in the country - Torcon, Inc. of Red Bank - passed away of lung cancer on August 27. He was 82.

Torcivia established Torcon, Inc. in 1965, and built the business into one that is currently ranked among the top 100 Construction Managers, with particular expertise in pharmaceutical, health care, science & technology and education projects. It is ranked in the Top 10 for R & D construction by Engineering News-Record. Torcon today has operations throughout the eastern United States and is the largest builder in Puerto Rico.

Torcon built many of the most iconic and recognizable buildings in New Jersey, including:

  • Gateway Center in Newark
  • The Exchange Place Center tower on the Jersey City waterfront
  • The Short Hills Hilton and Office Center
  • Princeton University’s Whitman College
  • Monmouth University’s new Multi-Purpose Activity Center

Torcivia was recognized throughout the industry as a man possessing the ultimate focus and determination necessary for success. Torcivia once said, “In this business, you can’t succeed without a good reputation. Even a reputation built over a lifetime can be ruined by one bad job. That’s why client satisfaction is our chief concern. Period.”

After his death, the company issued a statement that said: “Mr. Torcivia’s founding principles, exceptional performance and total customer focus, remain the core values of Torcon, and are carried on by his two sons, who have overseen daily operations of the company for over two decades.

Torcivia was a two-time president of the Building Contractors Association of NJ and in 2009 received the Lifetime Achievement Award from the New Jersey Alliance for Action. In 1998, he received the Leadership Excellence Award from the Kislak Real Estate Institute at Monmouth University. He graduated from Catholic University in 1951 with a degree in Architectural Engineering, and began his career in the construction industry as an estimator and expeditor for a large building company. He became the company president before leaving to launch Torcon.
