SAN DIEGO-The lecture halls at San Diego State University are getting a facelift, thanks to general contractor C.W. Driver, which has begun construction on a $73-million, 100,000-square-foot renovation and 30,000-square-foot expansion project for the existing Storm and Nasatir building complex at SDSU. The complex will offer program space for eight academic departments including anthropology, geography and foreign languages, among others. Completion is anticipated for January 2015.
Designed by LPA Inc. to achieve LEED Gold certification, the complex will include new and upgraded classroom technologies, academic and research laboratories and faculty offices for the College of Arts and Letters. Construction will be completed to meet current health and safety-code standards and will also incorporate plans to correct deferred maintenance issues and improve water and energy conservation. Additionally, the 30,000-square-foot classroom building will provide new space for the campus’ Language Acquisition Resources Center.
“We are excited to move forward on these renovations, which will provide upgraded resources to our students and staff,” said Bob Schulz, AVP of SDSU, in a prepared statement. “As a result, the buildings will create a more modern complex and more importantly, serve as a prominent campus cornerstone.”
While addressing the health and safety-code standards in the building complex, which was originally constructed in 1957, C.W. Driver will also deliver new code-compliant HVAC systems; new lighting and ceiling systems; and technology and electrical upgrades, such as new fire-alarm and security systems. To improve the building’s energy efficiency, renovations will also include new windows and an exterior finish. Also, new elevators, ramps, site work and door operators will be provided to ensure wheelchair access, and the complex will target LEED Gold certification by incorporating storm-water management, water-efficient plumbing and landscaping, and daylighting features into the project.
“Creating a sustainable facility is vital in today’s higher-education construction projects,” said Hank Withaar, project director at C.W. Driver, in a prepared statement. “In this particular case, the renovations to the older buildings will also allow the campus to employ state-of-the-art technologies and resources for the campus to enjoy for years to come.”
As GlobeSt.com reported last week, C.W. Driver has completed $20 million worth of upgrades at 10 schools located throughout the Santa Ana Unified School District. The projects were part of an overall $36.2 million given to SAUSD to provide various schools the funding for upgrades that meet 21st-Century needs.
