NEW YORK CITY-London. Singapore. Staten Island? Believe it or not, the New York City borough will be joining the ranks of these cosmopolitan cities when it becomes the new home to the world’s largest ferris wheel. That’s right – the familiar fairground ride will be brought to the Staten Island waterfront, standing strong at 625 feet tall; that’s 84 feet taller than the world’s current record-holder in Singapore.
At a press briefing today, Mayor Bloomberg unveiled the new face of the Staten Island waterfront. Developments will take place on sites next to the Richmond County Bank Ballpark in St. George. The propsed changes in this area will include the new Harbor Commons, a 350,000-square-foot retail complex currently being planned by BFC Partners. This retail property will include 100 designer outlet stores as well as a 120,000-square-foot hotel. BFC plans to spend $230 million to build the complex, with a 2016 completion date targeted.
Regarding the ferris wheel itself, a release from the Mayor’s office offered up some stats: it will have 36 capsules for what is hoped to be 30,000 riders per day during peak season. Per ride, the wheel should be able to hold 1,440 passengers.
