As one chairman (Boyd R. Zoccola) prepares to leave office and another (Joseph W. Markling) begins his term, it seemed an appropriate time to ask them to reflect and project.

Asked what he feels his biggest accomplishment was, Zoccola believes that, in an era of cutbacks it was "growing our services to meet the needs of the industry." The association has grown its suite of area-measurement standards, which now includes office, industrial, gross-area, multi-unit residential, retail and mixed-use. Plus, "We have more than 420 buildings in BOMA 360, which has become a viable alternative in the marketplace today."

The biggest surprise he says he encountered along the way was actually the breadth and depth of the issues facing the industry, and therefore BOMA. With some understandable pride, he believes, "We've been able to tackle those issues, especially with our coalition partners and the good work we're doing with other organizations."

As Markling suits up, his standard, he says, is "Better by Association," and the puzzle he will try to solve is how various associations can work even more closely "for the betterment of the industry. BOMA will become stronger by serving as a leading member of a coalition to fight for our industry."
