WYNEWOOD, PA-The former Borders Books & Music at the Wynnewood Shopping Center on the Main Line here is reportedly getting LA Fitness Club as a tenant. LINK

The store, one of 400 stores closed in fall of 2011 when the Borders Group went bankrupt has been vacant since, except for a couple of temporary tenants including a Halloween store.

Many of the former stores around the country have seen long-term vacancy. Last month, someone even pasted paper tombstones on the windows of the Ann Arbor, MI, flagship store.

On the other hand, several shop spaces have secured new leases on life, or at least gotten closer:

  • In Mount Kisco, NY, a prospective tenant is currently negotiating to lease the former Borders site downtown.
  • In Sacramento, CA, the grocery chain Fresh Market Inc. will open a new store in a former bookstore.
  • In Mentor, OH, a HomeGoods home furnishings store is moving into an ex-Borders located in a shopping plaza.

The Wynnewood Shopping Center, owned by Federal Realty Investment Trust, already includes Bed Bath & Beyond, a Giant Foods store and Old Navy.
