SANTA FE, NM—The award-winning La Fonda on the Plaza hotel will undergo a major guest room renovation beginning today.

Officials said the eight-month project will be one of the most expensive upgrades of the historic property's guest rooms since it was redesigned to its current form by in the 1920s.

The renovation will include window replacement, upgraded temperature controls, sound insulation, communication systems, electrical wiring and plumbing. Guest rooms will receive new floor coverings, window treatments and handcrafted furnishings, says the Albuquerque Business Journal.

Demolition work has begun on 100 of the guest rooms facing Water Street. Bradbury Stamm is the general contractor.

La Fonda opened in 1922 and sits steps from Santa Fe's historic plaza at 100 East San Francisco Street. La Fonda has 21,275 square feet of event space and is a member of the National Trust Historic Hotels of America.
