Austin, TX—City Council members are concerned about the city's ability to handle what they're calling urgent, new initiatives. The problem is that they don't have enough staff or money.

Among the tens of millions of dollars worth of new proposals is an intitiative to hire more staff to review development permits and building more affordable housing, says the Austin American-Statesman. The council will hold a meeting Tuesday to grapple with some of it.

City budget officers have already found $8.6 million, mostly from higher-than-expected sales tax collections and development fees last year.

But council members say the proposals will cost more than $8.6 million, though how much more is uncertain.
