AUSTIN, TX—The capital city's retail occupancy rate is better than most, and it improved by 1% since the end of 2011. Citing a report from The Weitzman Group, the Austin Business Journal also noted that restaurants were among the most active businesses in Austin in 2012.

Weitzman's retail roundup for 2012, showed that Austin had an overall occupancy rate of 94 percent, last year. It is the only major market in Texas, except for San Antonio, with an occupancy rate above 90%.

Retailers, which backfilled big box spaces in 2012, include LA Fitness, HomeGoods, Sheplers Western Wear, Bed Bath & Beyond, Whole Foods Market Inc., H&M, Microsoft Corp., Half Price Books, Fresh Plus, Petsense Inc., Salvation Army, Burke's Outlet, Precision Camera and Mi Tienda, H-E-B's Hispanic-oriented concept.
