NEW YORK CITY-To call the commercial real estate industry competitive is a huge understatement. But CRESA New York vice president Jamie Addeo says that hard work and perseverance will let the successful shine. As such, her advice to women just starting out in the industry is to work hard and do that extra bit of research to better show dedication to the profession. Additionally, she has never felt “different” being a woman in the industry and instead suggests you either have what it takes to thrive, or you don't.

Globest: Congratulations on your appointment as vice president with CRESA New York. What do you hope to achieve in this new role?

Thank you! It's a very exciting time for me and CRESA New York. This year, I plan on being an integral component to the success of our office. As you know, Mark Jaccom was named president and, under his leadership and guidance, we will increase our market share and show that we are best in class when it comes to tenant representation. We are a team here. The success of the office is a direct result of the total team effort.

Globest: What have you found most challenging or enlightening about being a woman in the commercial real estate industry? Why?

Honestly, I never really gave it much thought. Since day one, I never saw myself as being any different than any of my associates. I've experienced the same challenges in our business, cold calling or competition with much larger firms. The obvious day-to-day challenge facing many women in our business is to be judged as our male counterparts for what we bring to the table as serious real estate professionals. It really boils down to one thing whether you wear a suit or a dress: you either have it, or you don't. It doesn't matter if you're a male or female. At least I never looked at it that way.

Globest: What advice would you give to a younger woman just starting out in the industry?

As Ru Paul would say, “Girl, you gotta work!” For a young female starting out today, my suggestions would be to always be prepared. Go the extra mile, do your homework! Show you are the best for the job at hand. Be yourself. Trust me, your clients will see it and appreciate it. Have fun. This business is extremely exciting.

Globest: In your career so far, what has been your most memorable achievement or moment and why?

I've had two. The first was when I received my first commission check after coming off draw. I went home and sat in front of my mirror a cried for 10 minutes. I was incredibly proud of myself. There are so many names that come and go in this business as you progress. It was the realization that I had the tools, it was up to me now! My second memorable achievement was when I completed my second deal for my very first client in the business. This very successful Ivy league grad looked me square in the eyes, took my hand and said “Jamie, You have done an amazing job for my firm twice now. I respect your honesty, resilience and work ethic. You are my broker and friend.” It's not often that you hear those words in the Big Apple.
