MENLO PARK, CA—Developer Sand Hill Property Co. is inching toward the local approval it needs to convert a retirement home here to a Marriott Residence Inn.

The Menlo Menlo Park Planning Commission gave its approval to the plan this week, despite some concerns over parking spaces, says the Palo Alto Daily News. The proposal will be considered by the city council later this month.

Sand Hill hopes to convert the 138 rooms at Casa on the Peninsula senior living to an equal number of hotel suites, company spokesman Reed Moulds told the Daily News.

Under Menlo Park's El Camino Real/Downtown Specific Plan, that would require 173 parking spaces. However, because the Residence Inn wouldn't include amenities such as a full-service restaurant or banquet facilities that draw from the general public, the city's transportation manager required only 111 parking spaces, Senior Planner Thomas Rogers told the commissioners.
