IRVINE, CA—The 35-year-old University Center retail center here is shining brighter—and greener—than ever, as owner/manager Irvine Company Retail Properties has completed a 100% replacement of its common area lighting with LED lamps.
It is one of the first shopping centers in the country to be lit completely with a state-of-the-art lighting control system and energy-efficient technology. The center is located at Bridge Road and Campus Drive, in a densely populated area near Interstate 405, adjacent to the University of California, Irvine campus.
The project is the first in what Irvine Company anticipates will be a portfolio-wide LED conversion of the common area lighting at all its properties.
“University Center provided us with a unique opportunity to reduce costs to our tenants and upgrade the appearance of the property,” says Gregg LaCagnina, vice president of facilities management for Irvine Company Retail Properties. “Equally important, this upgrade is part of an overall corporate dedication to sustainability and green initiatives.”
The $750,000 retrofit included the replacement of 763 lamps and bulbs with cutting-edge LED fixtures, some designed specifically for the Irvine Company. New lighting was installed in the parking lot, ground and landscape lighting, soffits, center signage, security lights, neon signs, and hallway and exit signage at the 180,000-square-foot retail center and 180,000-square-foot office building.
