PORTLAND, OR—Developers may soon have to add more parking spaces to Portland apartment projects.
A proposal going before the Portland City Council would amend zoning ordinance to require a higher ratio of parking spaces for new multifamily buildings.
Local news reports indicate that the Portland Bureau of Planning and Sustainability voted 7 to 1 Tuesday to support a zone amendment that would add parking requirements for new multifamily projects.
The issue of parking emerged as developers took advantage of exemptions and irked neighbors in the Southeast Hawthorne district. Those long-term residents complained of clogged on-street parking when new developments became occupied.
Existing codes, which were developed in the 1980s, required no parking in certain areas and provide a pass for sites less than 500 feet from a transit stop with frequent bus service.
The proposed change would requires a minimum of one parking space per four dwelling units in new complexes with 40 or more units.
