ORANGE, CA-The City of Orange will be getting a new, 334-unit, eco-friendly apartment community after giving its approval for AMLI Residential to develop AMLI Uptown Orange here. The 5.6-acre urban-infill project, for which KTGY Group Inc. is the designer and architect, will be built on the site of an existing DoubleTree Hotel parking lot and will include the construction of two new parking structures: one for the DoubleTree Hotel and one for the apartment community's residents and guests. Construction costs have not yet been released, but groundbreaking is expected to take place this year.

“Uptown Orange is the name that the city originally established for the area, and our project builds on that brand name and seeks to create a stronger identity to the area,” said Bryan Sevy, senior project designer at KTGY, in a prepared statement.

The project is located directly south of the DoubleTree Hotel on the City Drive south near UCI Medical Center and the Outlets at Orange, formerly known as the Block at Orange. The commercial area surrounding the project features a modern, bold look, and the project's architecture will follow along these lines, blending contemporary architecture with classic, clean lines.

Sevy added that with the addition of AMLI Uptown Orange, “the area will now truly be a mixed-use district. This project contributes residential uses to an area that is already a regional employment center with professional jobs, transit, shopping and entertainment venues all within walking distance.”

The project will be built in phases to ensure that parking for the hotel is always available. First will be the 494-space parking structure for the existing hotel, followed by the building of the apartment complex with its own 608-space parking garage.

“One of the unique aspects about this project is that the two parking garages feature a four-story-tall screen of colored metal fins with integrated graphics that covers the entire length and height of the structure,” said Sevy. “Throughout the entire design and approval process, the lenticular design elements of the parking garage screen have been instantly liked and supported by all who have seen them.”

Designed to achieve LEED Silver certification, the four-story apartment community will contain leasing offices, a fitness center, a club room lounge, a business center, a pool and outdoor lunge areas. The apartment homes orient onto two landscaped courtyards and the perimeter public street in order to maximize visibility of the common open space.

According to Jason Armison, AMLI's SVP, “This is an outstanding location, and we believe our new apartments will add a great rental-home opportunity to the Uptown Orange District in the City of Orange.”

As GlobeSt.com reported in February, KTGY Group Inc. Architecture + Planning won awards at three different ceremonies during the National Association of Home Builders International Builders' Show in Las Vegas recently. The firm earned a platinum award as well as gold and silver awards and a special Innovation award.
