LONG BEACH, CA-The Green Port Gateway Rail Project kicks off today at Pico Ave. just south of Ocean Blvd. The project, initiated by the Port of Long Beach, is expected to ease rail traffic at the busiest port complex in the country and generate hundreds of construction jobs.

Speakers at today's kickoff event include US Rep Alan Lowenthal, US maritime administrator David Matsuda, Long Beach Mayor Bob Foster, California transportation commissioner Fran Inman, Long Beach Board of Harbor Commissioners president Susan E. Anderson Wise and Port of Long Beach executive director J. Christopher Lytle.

The Green Port Gateway Project is one of several the Port has identified to enhance efficiency and to increase the Port's “on-dock” rail capacity. On-dock rail helps to eliminate truck trips by rail-hauling containers directly to and from marine terminals. Federal and state funding is helping to pay for the project. The Green Port Gateway Project realigns tracks near Ocean Blvd., adds nearly 6 miles of new track and creates a new Pier F Support Yard that will eventually serve the Middle Harbor terminal now under construction.

As GlobeSt.com reported in February, the Port of Long Beach has begun a tree-planting initiative to beautify the city and cut greenhouse gases. The project kicked off recently at Silverado Park here.

The initiative, identified by the slogan “I Dig Long Beach—6,000 Trees by 2020,” began with the planting of 50 trees in the park—located at 32nd St. and Santa Fe Ave.—and at adjacent John Muir Elementary School. The Port awarded a $671,200 Greenhouse Gas Emissions Reduction grant to the City's Development Services Department to fund the project. The money will support the development of an “urban forest” throughout Long Beach that will help absorb greenhouse gases, provide wildlife habitat, cool land surface and increase property values.
