LOS ANGELES-The Courtyard Los Angeles Marina del Rey has been acquired and will become a DoubleTree by Hilton branded property.

The hotel will be changing its name to Hotel MdR Marina del Rey and starting a $7 million revamp of the property. DoubleTree by Hilton is a brand under Hilton Worldwide.

Terms of the deal, which closed March 28, were not disclosed. The purchase was made by Channel West Group and Arris Investments LLC, with senior principals of Evolution Hospitality, a privately-owned hospitality management and investment firm based in San Clemente, CA, also making an equity investment. Evolution will operate the hotel.

Hotel design upgrades will be conducted between November of this year and Feb. 2014. Preliminary renovations began at the hotel last year, with updates to all 277 guestrooms and suites. When property renovations are complete early next year, the hotel will unveil a modern design aesthetic implemented by Atlanta-based architecture firm CMMI.

Among the enhancements will be the addition of six new guestrooms, bringing the total number on the property to 283; the addition of a poolside seating area for the hotel's new restaurant concept, which will be announced next year; the debut of an outdoor fireplace and fire pit by the pool; the addition of a ping-pong room and new audio-visual equipment for the hotel's 5,725 square feet of meeting space; and a redesign of the lobby and front desk areas.

Steve McKenzie, managing partner of Channel West Group, said the prime targets for the revamped hotel will be business travelers from the area's numerous hi-tech firms, including offices for Google, YouTube, Sony and Electronic Arts. He tells GlobeSt.com that the goal is to “instill a sense of fun in the property” for the proposed audience, citing the ping pong room, outdoor fireplaces and evening cocktail service near the pool.

“The hotel's overall feel will be upgraded with high ceilings in the restaurant, bar and public areas, and we plan to improve the indoor-outdoor flow to take full advantage of the great outdoor space in the hotel's central courtyard and pool area,” McKenzie says.

Guests staying at the Hotel MdR Marina del Rey will have access to over 40 nearby shops, dining establishments and entertainment options, including the country's first Dine-In AMC Movie Theatre in the adjacent Marina Marketplace. Also located nearby are the Abbot Kinney District, the Marina Del Rey Yacht harbor offering water sports, 27 miles of bike paths. DoubleTree by Hilton offers 19 hotels in the Los Angeles area.
