COLUMBUS—Ohio State University, which boasts a student population of more than 63,000, has selected the team that will finalize the design and handle the construction of the renovation program for its North Residential District. The decision brings to close a process that began in early December, when the university started in a competitive review process with each qualified firm to generate additional ideas on how to deliver the project. According to Ohio State officials, the review process has already saved the university $26 million, bringing the project budget down to $370 million.
“The time and effort we put into this review process allowed us to work with industry experts to identify efficiencies in construction techniques and scheduling that will not only save a significant amount of money, but will also allow us to deliver facilities that will enhance the student experience,” as part of the school's new Second-year Transformational Experience Program, says Jay Kasey, OSU's senior vice president for Administration and Planning. “We are dedicated to keeping costs affordable for students while delivering an exceptional product.”
Locally based Messer Construction will lead the project team, which includes Miles-McClellan Construction, Jacobs Engineering Group Inc., Brailsford & Dunlavey, HKS Inc., Schooley Caldwell Associates, KZF Design Inc., Heapy Engineering, Shelley Metz Baumann Hawk, Korda Nemeth Engineering and MKSK. The design team that brought the project to this point is comprised of Sasaki Associates Inc., Elkus Manfredi Architects, OLIN and Acock Associates Architects.
Once contracts are finalized, Ohio State will work with Messer to complete the design and implement construction. Officials expect to begin infrastructure and small, enabling project work will begin this summer, and complete the entire project in time for the fall semester of 2016.
In all, the plan would add about 3,200 new beds to the North Residential Area, along with new dining, recreation and other support facilities. “At the core of the STEP initiative is student engagement and student success,” says Javaune Adams-Gaston, OSU's vice president for Student Life. “This project will enhance and expand our ability to provide an extraordinary student experience at Ohio State.”
