TULSA-Angela West, vice president and president-elect next of SIOR, manages and oversees the regional directors, which oversee the chapter presidents of the organization. We had an interview with West last week, who is also a vice president with CBRE in its Tulsa office. This time, we spoke with her about the importance of next week's SIOR convention and how the organization has helped her out.
GlobeSt.com: What has SIOR meant to you and what do you think is its importance to its membership?
Angela West: SIOR is the place that I go to grow and learn new and different things that I can't find in my local market. Its importance is creating a peer group that is collaborative and open to sharing best practices and transactions. It's also a go-to place for referring businesses outside my market in transacting. One of the things that differentiates SIOR are our ethics policies and our procedures that create a safety net relief for anybody working outside their own market with brokers they don't know. The SIOR ethics process has a layer of protection when you're transacting outside your own market.
GlobeSt.com: What will people be talking about this year?
West: Post-election policies will be discussed. And the conferences provide a way for brokers to benchmark the volume and velocity of transactions in their market against other regions of the country. It's a great data pool.
GlobeSt.com: Will it be more upbeat than in the past or is there still uncertainty in the market?
West: Everyone is cautiously optimistic. We have had increased business volumes for most of the brokers across the country, but everyone is cautious in overstating their potential pipeline. Transactions are always uncertain until they care completed.
GlobeSt.com: What are you seeing in your side of the business? Any particular trends?
West: We are seeing tenants come to the market with longer-term leases and starting to evaluate their options earlier in the process. We are seeing tenants able to commit for longer-term leases than we have in the past four or five years. Rents are very fragmented around the country in terms of improvement of rental rate. Product type and market are the two variables.
