LOS ANGELES–A new all-digital Cinemark Theatre is coming to the SouthBay Pavilion. Construction on the 57,000-square-foot multiplex will begin this summer.

The 14-screen multiplex will be constructed in the space's center to maximize parking options for theater attendees. The opening is anticipated in Dec. 2014. Cinemark has a dozen theaters in the L.A. area. All were changed from digital to film in the last year.

“Cinemark is a premier operator and its theatre at SouthBay Pavilion will be a tremendous addition to this underserved market,” said a statement from Fred Sands, chairman of Vintage Real Estate, the mall's owner. “The closest theatres are miles away in the cities of Torrance and Redondo Beach."

The 1.1 million-square-foot SouthBay Pavilion is set on 73 acres located off the 405 Freeway at the Avalon Boulevard exit just south of the South Bay beach cities. It is anchored by Ikea, Target, Sears, JC Penney and Old Navy. SouthBay Pavilion draws from a population of 580,000 within a five-mile radius and 2.5 million within a 10-mile radius.

The new Cinemark Theatre will feature wall-to-wall, ceiling-to-floor screens in all auditoriums; 4K digital projection with RealD 3D capability; enhanced sound systems, and self-serve concession stands. A Cinemark spokesman was not immediately available for comment.

Highlighting the new theater is the large screen format Cinemark XD Extreme Digital Cinema. It features a 72-foot, wall-to-wall and ceiling-to-floor screen, plus seating and a custom digital surround sound system. The digital images will be delivered by a Doremi server and a Barco DLP digital projector. The XD auditorium will exhibit the newest movies each week, including 2D and RealD 3D films.

Roger Burghdorf, executive VP of leasing for Vintage Real Estate, said in a statement that studies from the International Council of Shopping Centers say the addition of a theater should increase a mall's sales by 17% to 22%.

Recent additions to South Bay Pavilion include an Olive Garden restaurant, a new Beauty Lounge & Spa that offers full-service spa and salon services; and an Old Navy currently under construction on a new store which will be its latest design and will carry its newest clothing lines. New fashion retailers are also slated to open soon along with several new restaurants and fast casual dining.

As reported earlier by GlobeSt.com, Vintage Real Estate recently celebrated the groundbreaking of a $17-million renovation and expansion of The Village at Nellie Gail Ranch. A centerpiece of the expansion will be the Southland's first Fresh Market.
