CHICAGO-Kathy Sandstrom, senior managing director with Heitman, has seen the commercial real estate industry welcome more women into higher roles. In fact, she is one such individual, being that she was named equity partner at the age of 39 and was the second woman in the company to hold such a role. Ultimately, she feels that communication is a key factor in success in this field, regardless of gender and that differences between the way men and women approach life should be celebrated.
Globest: How did you get started in the commercial real estate industry?
When I graduated from college with an accounting degree, I knew that I did not want to join a big public accounting firm. I joined Heitman in the investor accounting group and quickly realized two things: I loved the real estate investment business and I did not love accounting in practice. I moved into the firm's investor relations group shortly thereafter.
Globest: Congratulations on your new appointment! What are you most looking forward to with this position?
Thank you, I am really excited about this opportunity! I am fortunate to have a great team with a strong track record, allowing me to focus on shaping the strategic direction of a truly global investment business. Communication among the team members is key. Our global real estate securities team is located in offices in five countries. Keeping everyone connected, informed and included is a full-time job in itself. It's both a challenge and an opportunity that I look forward to conquering
Globest: As a woman in the industry, what have you noticed about how other women are treated? How has this changed over time?
I continue to see more women at every level of the business, including in senior leadership roles. Our presence in the ranks changes the conversation. Women bring a distinctive and important dynamic to any industry. We look at things through a different lens and offer unique and contrasting views to those of our male colleagues. Our numbers are not perfect or balanced in the business, but the ratios have definitely improved over the years.
Globest: Please describe a highlight of your career and why it was so.
I am blessed to have landed at Heitman and work with the people that I do. My 16 years have been filled with a series of adventures and successes that have made the time go quickly. Being named an equity partner at 39 and, at the time, being only the second woman to hold that title, is one of my most cherished accomplishments. My new role, heading our securities business, is a close second.
Globest: And finally, what advice can you offer women just starting out in the industry?
Be yourself and don't be afraid to take chances. Often I see women who feel they have to emulate what a man would do in any given situation, so that they fit into a man's world. That is such a loss. Women have a unique perspective and one that should be heard. Be true to who you are and find your voice. That will never do you wrong.
