HOUSTON-The Houston Business Journal reports that the 52-year-old Gerland Corp., which operates Food Fair, Food Town and Grand Market, is being acquired by Grocers Supply Co. Inc., a Houston-based wholesale distributor to chains such as Fiesta Mart (which it also owns). The acquisition is anticipated to close at the end of the day on June 16, according to the article.
Grocers Supply currently owns approximate 15.6% of the market share in the Houston MSA whereas Gerland's Food Town chain has less than 2% of the market share. Grocers Supply continues to expand as well – the locally based Fiesta Mart Inc. announced it would open its first location in Sugar Land, a 41,000-square-foot store at 13833 SH 59.
