GLENDALE, CA-In an UPDATE to a previous story, the city is now officially asking itself, “Y?” That's Gen Y, as more than 160 people gathered last week to mark the grand opening of a mixed-use apartment complex here specifically designed to accommodate the tastes and needs of young adults.

The Elevé Lofts & Skydeck was conceived by AMF Development LLC (which goes by AMFD) as a “hip, technologically savvy and very sociable” place to live. The focus of the grand opening celebration--and of the 208-unit complex--is the 26,000-square-foot Skydeck, which features two spas with hot and cool spa tubs, a private sundeck and semiprivate cabanas, a media center with three outdoor flatscreens and an oversized movie screen, a poet's corner with piano and lounge seating, a gas grill BBQ area, outdoor seating and fire pits, a fenced-in dog park with washing area, and a demonstration kitchen area with range top and granite counter.

“This 165,000-square-foot complex will draw young urban renters into the Glendale area,” said a statement from Greg Parker, CEO of AMFD. “They want all the amenities of a luxury apartment building without the luxury price tag and don't mind a smaller space. In fact, Elevé offers them all of this in a walkable, socially hip area. There is no question that this type of housing will become the norm in major California urban areas in the future.”

Elevé is at 200 E. Broadway in Glendale, which puts it near more than 100 restaurants, 10 local schools, more than 150 clothing and accessory shops, six movie theaters, the Glendale Public Library, 10 grocers and markets and Glendale Central Park.

The apartment layouts in Elevé range from 375 square feet to 1,125-square-foot units, featuring open-concept living and kitchen areas and defined bedroom spaces. Laundry units, stainless steel kitchen appliances, granite countertops and high-gloss white cabinetry come standard in each unit. Rents range from $1,500 to $2,850 per month.

Alan Dibartolomeo, chief development officer for AMFD, said in a statement that the company launched a national survey to determine Gen Y tastes. The results “ranked community and amenities higher than square footage when it comes to rentals,” he says.

Community amenities in the complex include a complete fitness center with the latest cardio and resistance machines, a fully furnished business center with multiple Wi-Fi-enabled workstations, and gated subterranean parking which features storage for 75 bicycles and charging locations for electric vehicles.

Executives from AMFD were not immediately available for additional comment.

As previously reported by GlobeSt.com, the Elevé concept may be rolled out in other cities.
