So....What do you get when you put together the combined annual US revenue of Kroger, Costco, The Home Depot and Walgreen? A company that would still have sales short of Walmart, by mmore than $20 billion.

As most people know, Walmart is the largest retailer in the US (and world). The other four above round out the top five. This, and some other interesting information, can be found in a National Retail Federation report of the top 100 retailers.

The list also reveals the big chains that are experiencing the most expansion. Not including those that grew by acquisitions, like Bed Bath & Beyond's purchase of Cost Plus, the biggest movers were: Darden Restaurants, up 9.5%; Tractor Supply Co., up 8.4%; WinCo Foods, up 7.5%; Dick's Sporting Goods, up 7.1%; and Nordstrom, up 6.7%.

Not surprisingly, leaders in organic sales growth were Amazon.com and Apple Stores. Niether were the largest restaurant chains by revenue. In order: McDonald's, Yum! Brands, Subway, Wendy's and Starbucks.
