Funky Bar May Yield to Lux Hotel

HERMOSA BEACH, CA-Plans are underway to build a 104-room luxury beachfront hotel on the site of some funky but chic bars and restaurants here.

HERMOSA BEACH, CA-A beachfront land parcel that now hosts a series of funky but chic local bars, restaurants and retailers may give way to a luxury beachfront hotel development. The planned development still must be entitled by the city government here.

Bolour Assoc. of Beverly Hills and Portland, OR.-based Provenance Hotels are the hotel project’s backers. They bought the beachfront land for $19.5 million from a family trust headed by Diana Albergate, the step-daughter of one Quentin L. “Boots” Thelen, the long-time operator of the Mermaid. The 62-year-old, somewhat downscale Mermaid drinking establishment once made the Esquire magazine list of America’s best bars.
