GLOUCESTER, NJ-Final approvals have been granted for construction of the Gloucester Premium Outlets retail center between Black Horse Pike and Route 42 here, and work is expected to begin in the fall.
The 450,000-square-foot retail project is a joint venture between PREIT-Rubin, Inc. and Simon Management Associates, part of Simon Property Group, the country's largest developer of malls and shopping centers.
Simon developed the Jersey Shore Premium Outlets and the Philadelphia Premium Outlets. PREIT-Rubin, part of Pennsylvania Real Estate Investment Trust, also owns and operates shopping and community centers, including the Cherry Hill and Moorestown malls, Voorhees Town Center and the Cumberland Mall.
The Gloucester outlets will include 415,000 square feet of space, situated west of Cooper Road. Five commercial buildings with a total of 35,000 square feet will also be built east of Cooper Road.
“We hope there will be shovels in the ground in September,” said Gloucester's mayor, David Mayer said. Planners hope to have the outlet center open by November of next year.
Plans filed with the town say upscale retailers will include purveyors of fashion, sportswear, shoes, fine leather, luggage, jewelry, housewares and home furnishing, specialty items and food merchants. Four food kiosks are planned for the complex, which will have a green “town center.”
The 65-acre site owned by Cooper Health System has been used as farmland, but was declared a redevelopment zone in 2008.
Woodlands and wetlands around the site are to be preserved, according to the site plan.
