Water, Road, Airport Projects Win Approval

BAYONNE, NJ-The Garden State was showered with attention by the Port Authority as it approved a new cruise ship terminal for Cape Liberty here, a new interchange ramp to the Goethels Bridge and runway work at Newark Liberty International.

BAYONNE, NJ-Royal Caribbean Cruise Lines will build a new $70 million cruise terminal building at the Port Authority-owned marine terminal facility here, according to a plan approved by the PA board Wednesday. By next year, the cruise line will base the region’s largest cruise vessel at the new facility.

The authority paid attention to New Jersey’s roadways and airways at its board meeting, too, approving:

  • $130 million worth of road work on the Garden State side of the Goethals Bridge, and
  • Addition of four new taxiways at Newark Liberty International airport, as part of a $100 million runway overhaul (read more on these stories below.)

The new Quantum of the Seas cruise ship, which can accommodate up to 4,180 passengers, will sail to the Caribbean, Bahamas, Florida and Bermuda. The PA agreed to extend Royal Caribbean’s operating rights at the terminal by five years, through 2043, as part of the deal.
