NEW YORK CITY-And the contract to redevelop the George Washington Bridge Bus Station goes to….Tutor Perini Corp. The builder landed a $100 million agreement to modernize the outdated facility in Washington Heights, a process that will include quadrupling the building's existing 30,000 square feet of retail space. The contract was awarded by the George Washington Bridge Development Venture LLC—the project development partner for the Port Authority of New York & New Jersey—of which the principals are SJM Partners and GWB Ninety Nine, LLC.

Construction will start later this year on the improved facility, including its planned 120,000 square feet of retail stores. Among those slated to be at the Bus Station are Marshalls, Blink Fitness, Key Food Supermarket and Gateway News, GlobeSt.com has learned.

The station facility will be made ADA-compliant, with new bus loading areas and passenger amenities, as well as new escalators and ADA elevators from the subway and street to the bus station level. The facility also will feature state-of-the-art, real-time signage as well as new and enhanced life safety systems. All bus operations will be consolidated and housed under an open-air rooftop bus concourse with a modern, fully air-conditioned passenger pavilion, a spacious waiting area, ticketing and restrooms. The pavilion will provide views of the George Washington Bridge from one side and arriving and departing buses from the other.

Back in June, 2011, the Port Authority board approved a $183.2 million renovation plan for the George Washington Bridge Bus Station. The project is the largest-ever renovation of the terminal, which opened in 1963.
