NEW YORK CITY-For shoppers who like to comparison shop online while they're in bricks-and-mortar stores—or for those who want to “like” a store on Facebook while physically shopping there—the retail experience in Brooklyn just became much more user-friendly.

Boingo Wireless has announced a new agreement with Forest City Ratner Companies to provide free Wi-Fi service, beginning this fall, at the Atlantic Terminal Mall. The shopping center and the adjacent Atlantic Terminal serve more than 40 million shoppers and commuters annually.

The Los Angeles-based Boingo will manage and operate a centralized Wi-Fi network that provides consumers service on their smartphones, tablets and laptops as they shop, roam the mall or get ready for their commute from Atlantic Terminal, which is reportedly one of New York City's busiest mass transit hubs.

“Boingo is an ideal fit for the Atlantic Terminal Mall, which includes not only some of the region's best performing retailers, but which also sits at Brooklyn's key hub for subway, Long Island Rail Road (LIRR) and bus service,” says Kathryn Welch, EVP of retail for FCRC. “The company has extensive experience in operating high-quality Wi-Fi services at leading shopping destinations nationwide, and carrier-grade networks in high-density locations like some of the world's busiest airports.

In fact, Boingo has partnerships with six other shopping center operators in the nation, including Westfield, Caruso Affiliated, Glimcher Realty Trust, Cafaro and Urban Retail, with agreements to provide wireless services for more than 40 locations serving more than 300 million consumers every year.

Adds Doug Lodder, VP of business development for Boingo, “We have more than a decade of experience in designing, managing and operating turn-key wireless networks at premier locations with high foot traffic, and we're building the Atlantic Terminal Mall network to scale with projected increases in consumer data demand from high-bandwidth activities like video and music streaming. At launch, our network will allow consumers to connect and engage in their favorite online activities without exhausting their capped data plans, and will be optimized for future carrier offload.”
