Ben Gonyea, vice president, product with data services provider Telx®, tells GlobeSt.com that their recent power expansion at the city's Lakeside Technology Center at 350 E. Cermak Rd. was not the result of a new lease. In order to give their clients' confidence in the firm's staying power, Telx typically signs long-term leases, usually about 20 years, for the space it leases at data centers and Telx first moved into Lakeside in 2006.

Furthermore, Gonyea calls suites at Lakeside “turnkey space” that has all critical infrastructure ready to go, including power and the accompanying cooling systems. So when a previous tenant recently left two suites at the center, which, in addition to the extra 1.2 megawatts, have about 12,000-square-feet of space, Telx could rather quickly move in. The company now occupies about 80,000-square-feet of space in Lakeside.

Although the center has about 1.1-million-square-feet of space, Gonyea says “we play a unique part in the ecosystem of the building” by running its “Meet-Me-Room,” which allows the building's users to efficiently exchange data.

The original story appears below:

CHICAGO—Telx®, a New York-based interconnection and data center services provider, announced this morning that they were adding 1.2 megawatts of power to their facility at Chicago's giant Lakeside Technology Center, a 1.1-million-square-foot data center hub, one of the world's largest, at 350 E. Cermak Rd. on the city's near south side.

Telx operates the interconnection area known as the “Meet-Me-Room” and with this new power addition across two suites, the company now operates eight suites exceeding 3.7 megawatts of high-density collocation space. Company officials say this makes Telx one of the largest colocation providers at the facility.

Owned by the Digital Realty Trust, the Lakeside Technology Center was originally developed by the R.R. Donnelley Co. to house their printing presses, but was converted to telecom use in 1999, and today serves as the Internet backbone for the city's commodity markets. The building now has more than 100 megawatts of power.

“Telx's expansion strategy as well as their ability to foster new business connections for our company via their robust ecosystem was a big factor in our decision to nearly triple our suite space,” says Tom Guinan, executive vice president and chief technology officer for Advantage Futures.

Telx now has 20 data centers located all over the country, including six in the New York metro area and two in Chicago.
