PRYOR CREEK, OK-The local media reports that Google Inc. paid $24.5 million to acquire ownership rights to a former Gatorade manufacturing plant in the massive MidAmerica Industrial Park. In acquiring the vacant facility, Google paid a fraction of the amount of PepsiCo's investment just five years ago.

During the mid-2000s, PepsiCo invested $180 million to build the plant at 3500 Main St. MAIP, also known as US 69A, northeast of Tulsa. The plant obtained Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design gold certification, and was developed in response to rising demand for Gatorade drinks.

However, PepsiCo closed the plant just two years after its opening, laying off 108 people in the process. According to the Daily Oklahoman and Tulsa World, the plant is one of the largest industrial buildings in the state. Furthermore, MidAmerica Industrial Park is the largest industrial park in the state.

From a logistics point, the buy benefits Google, as the plant is across the way from the company's data center. “The purchase of the idled facility across from our data center is a logical choice given our ongoing partnership with the MidAmerica Industrial Park,” Mike Wooten, Google Oklahoma data center operations manager, said in a release about the sale. “MidAmerica continues to be a strong partner for us here in Oklahoma and we appreciate their proactive and pro-business approach.”

Matt Klimisch, first vice president with CBRE's Tulsa office, headed the team that negotiated the sale of the building to Google. Google does not have specific plans for the structure.
