AUGUSTA, GA-Earlier this week came word that Bass Pro Shops was not moving forward with a plan to build a new 50,000-square-foot store here. Columbia County officials say that the retailer at the 11th hour asked for additional incentives that they found unreasonable.
According to County Administrator Scott Johnson, Bass Pro Shops informed the county it wanted additional incentives, including “the cost of their vertical construction up to $10 million,” according to The Augusta Chronicle. Those demands were not something the county was willing to consider, Johnson says.
The Bass Pro Shops Outpost to be built on Mason McKnight Jr. Parkway was announced in late July, just before competitor, Cabela's Inc., announced that it would locate a store in Augusta.
County officials contend Bass Pro Shops abandoned its store plan due to its belief that the market would not support two major outdoor retailers. The company through a statement denied that competition was a factor in its decision. See story in the Augusta Chronicle.
