JERSEY CITY, NJ-Hollister Construction Services has started work on a three-story addition for the BelovED Community Charter School, an elementary school for K-3rd grade students.
The school at 508 Grand Street is in a 12-year-old building that was formerly the home of the Schomburg Charter School. The 22,388-square-foot addition will house new classrooms, an exercise room, cafeteria, art room and nurse's office.
Urbahn Architects designed the addition for the BelovED school, which takes its name from a quote by Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.: “Our goal is to create a beloved community and this will require a qualitative change in our souls as well as a quantitative change in our lives.”
“Hollister is a strong supporter of the charter school movement, so it is especially gratifying to be involved in a significant project that addresses the needs of underserved children,” said Christopher A. Johnson, Hollister CEO.
Hollister's Robert Sander will manage construction at the site.
Johnson said his company's extensive experience in managing education projects enables it to “value engineer,” and use cost-effective materials and construction methods. In this case, that led to enough savings to allow the school to refine their design and add an additional full floor, he said.
Hollister has completed dozens of educational projects in New Jersey and New York. Some of the more recent projects include:
- management of capital improvements for Fairleigh Dickinson University
- phase one of a building addition and renovation for University Heights Charter School in Newark
- ground-up construction of a 63,855-square-foot charter high school for Team Academy in Newark, and
- renovation of facilities for the Scott Flamm Center For Afterschool Development in Newark.
