SAN FRANCISCO-Those who follow @GlobeStcom on Twitter and @GlobeStLIVE may have seen a post teasing the announcement, but GlobeSt.com “tweeted from Twitter.” True story. GlobeSt.com joined NAREE members Thursday night at the Twitter headquarter building in San Francisco for a behind the scene look at their innovative workspace on the same day the company went public.

Twitter is located in the Market Square building, a 775,000-square-foot art deco structure completed in 1937 but the building was redeveloped in 2012 by Shorenstein Properties. It has been said that Shorenstein's redevelopment of the building at 1355 Market St. is credited as catalyst for revitalization of the Mid-Market district in the city.

Jim Collins, VP of leasing of Shorenstein Realty Services, served as the tour guide, and began by providing a quick intro to the development of the building, then lead the group to the Twitter floor to chat more about the redevelopment process.

Market Square consists of two buildings joined by a landscaped plaza and features 890,000 square feet of class A office space above 200,000 square feet of street-level retail, he explained. The original building, formerly known as the Western Furniture Exchange and Merchandise Mart, is an Art Deco icon.

The 80,000-square-foot floor plates and large blocks of contiguous space allow occupants extraordinary opportunities and virtually unlimited configurations to create customized work environments, said Collins. Shorenstein has leased over 638,000 square feet of space to technology tenants including Twitter, Yammer, Call Socket and One King's Lane.

When completed in the spring of 2014, the second building, known as 1TENth, will be one of only a few buildings in San Francisco with more than 300,000 square feet of available, contiguous, creative office space. Once completed, the properties will create a cohesive urban campus environment, says Collins. (Even the lobby walls—as you will see in our update story—used wood from part of the building that was torn down.
